Group Update
How is everyone doing? How are those Green Smoothies? What are your favorite combinations?
Hi everyone, Although I am not able to come to the meetings I have joined in the fun through email. Julia, thanks so much for this opportunity. Brooke is also enjoying the smoothies, she is 12. We had some fun with her friends and she had me make the smoothie to share with them then after they were enjoying it, she told them there was spinach in it.
I have not ventured out very far, I am still doing just the basic spinach, romaine, banana, mixed berries. I probably need some variety so I look forward to everyone's ideas.
This is the first to time to try anything remotely healthy in our home on purpose. The smoothies are going over very well for everyone but my 8 year old boy. I think he is having a hard time getting past the green look. But with 8 kids that's a good ratio. We usually have one in the morning and then I make some for my husband in the afternoon and my kids all want a second. I have stopped buying soda and am not missing it. Only wish I had more space in my refrig.
Really appreciate this update! I was making a full mixer every morning and in the evening which helped us to get that required quart in a day. All was going well until we went out of town and I believe I was starting to detox (a big & radical diet change for those three days) and when we came home I felt so bad I kind of slacked off the smoothies. I am really sorry I did! I haven't been sleeping, my thinking seems to have become more foggy. Going to the restroom has become difficult (again), not hardly any energy. I really can go on. So, if I look at this as a small experiment then I know what I need to do. Keep drinking...it keeps working! If you have tried any new flavors don't be shy and pass them along! Thanks Julia for the wisdom you are sharing with us! We REALLY appreciate it here!
I am really enjoying the new energy I've found. I drink 2 cups green smoothie for breakfast and then the other 2 cups for lunch after working out. Occasionally I've tried eating a regular breakfast (poached eggs and a piece of ww toast) or a regular lunch (1/2 sandwich and soup), BUT I don't feel nearly as well as when I stick with the smoothie. AND when I go out with hubby, well...I can't wait to get back to my green smoothies!
I can't eat a lot of fruit (gives me ear problems), but I love adding bok choy, napa cabbage, and kale to my drinks. Spinach is, of course, tastiest, but I don't want to overdo that veggie. I usually add an apple to the mix, a frozen banana, and a quarter of a lemon.
One smoothie I made almost got thrown out...but I can't stand to waste anything, so I persevered. My printer ink is low, so I couldn't print off the recipes, and instead just threw whatever in. This one I put a beet in...didn't know if you were supposed to peel it or what...so I threw in the beet greens, chopped off the tail and the crown where the greens come out, and threw that in (w/o peeling it). I don't know if it was the beet or the coconut cream I put in, but it left much to be desired. (But talk about a colon cleanse!!!) Moral of that story: only add 1 new ingredient at a time so you'll know what you can handle. Next time I'll try peeling the beet and maybe use only half of it, but no coconut cream. (Don't know if I'll ever eat coconut again!):0) The way I made it through that one was by diluting it down with a bunch of spinach and some more water. I'm lovin' it! Sharon
We are having our green smoothies each afternoon around 3:30 or 4:00 and they are great to prevent that afternoon low that many people experience during the day. I think it also helps us to eat a little less for supper. I started using Kale this week with orange juice, banana and pineapple, peaches, strawberries, mangoes or mixed berries. When I use the mixed berries or the spring mix greens, we call it our chocolate smoothies. Hope you are all enjoying your smoothies.
I've enjoyed reading everyone's input about making and drinking green smoothies; so here's my two cents worth:
I love green smoothies! That's my favorite "meal" right now. One of my favorite things about them is the smell. The aroma is wonderful when it's ready to be poured into a glass; I always have to have a big whiff. Of course, the flavor is usually pretty wonderful, too. Last summer I had some really nice pole beans in the garden. I tried adding a few of them to my green smoothie. That was the only time I've had to throw a smoothie out because I couldn't drink it. It was nasty! I think it was a texture issue; usually that's not a problem for me. I am, however, looking forward to gardening season being here again soon. I had so much fun last summer gathering fresh greens and herbs in the garden and then bringing them in to make a smoothie. Some of the things I picked were lettuces, spinich, chard, kale, borage leaves and flowers (those are delicious in smoothies), basil, nasturtiums, sage, dill, and mint. Also chives, but I don't recommend those for smoothies either. I hope to try additional herbs this year.
